In December 2018, Berlin Mondiale invited me to mentor a team of young professionals on designing a magazine that documents their work in the fields of media, art and culture. Together with a team of editors, illustrators, producers and the core team of WAS GEHT?!*, we planned and organized an editorial bootcamp to write, edit, design and produce the kick-off issue of the WAS GEHT?! magazine entitled: Auf Anfang!
WAS GEHT?! Vol.01 is the resulting participatory design project, experimenting with mixed media and unconventional editorial processes. The magazine was designed in parallel with its content, making the design process an integral part of content-creation. The team of young professionals learned editorial design processes and requirements, made formal decisions and mediated their work through a consistent, memorable visual language.
WAS GEHT?! brings together a group of young media professionals from different cultural backgrounds and experiences to report on art and culture, politics and society; focusing not only on aspects of migration, asylum and exile, but on topics that affect everyday life in Berlin. The project aims to create a space in which political realities can be negotiated, while focusing on collaborative and alternative learning through creation. The editorial team has worked journalistically in digital media as well as in photography, video and creative writing.
