Soura Film Festival 5

This key visual was created in sweat and spirit, celebrating queer existences entwined with struggles for land liberation. At its heart is the olive harvest season—an October tradition in the SWANA region—where queer bodies, indigenous to the landscape and essential to its sustenance, are intimately cradled by their roots. The olives honor the memory of my teta Julie—may she root deeper wherever she is.

About The Festival

Beyond LGBTQ+ issues, queerness, as seen by the festival, intersects with feminism, migration, and human relationships that resist oppressive norms. In the SWANA region, queer communities have long been politically engaged, resisting criminalizing laws and advocating for change.

Soura Film Festival uplifts filmmakers who center queerness and the struggles of marginalized communities. The festival firmly opposes pinkwashing, purplewashing, and any efforts that co-opt these struggles for superficial representation.
